AFUL emerged under HiFiGO sponsorship, with rumors of former Moondrop engineering influence. Their first model, Performer 3, proved they understood structure and balance. Fast forward a few years and the Performer 8S feels like a more mature statement.
This is not a surface-level impression. I tested it across multiple chains and configurations:
- HiBy R4 – 4.4mm balanced – Qobuz
- Cayin N8ii – Solid-state & Tube modes – Class A
- Air plug ON and OFF
- Stock tips + included alternate tips
Box, Content and the Cable
The AFUL Performer 8S arrives in packaging that feels clean and deliberate rather than flashy. The box design reflects the brand’s more mature positioning — minimal graphics, structured layout, and a sense that the focus is on the product rather than marketing noise. Opening it, everything is neatly arranged, with the earpieces presented securely and the accessories compartmented in an organized manner. It doesn’t scream luxury, but it does feel considered and tidy.

Inside the box, you get the Performer 8S earpieces, multiple meshes and cleaning tool if needed, the detachable cable (terminated in 4.4mm balanced in my case), multiple sets of silicone eartips including stock and alternate variations. AFUL includes enough tip variety to experiment with fit and tonal balance right away, which matters here given how responsive the 8S is to acoustic changes. A carrying case is also included, practical rather than extravagant, but protective and usable for daily transport.
General Tonal Character (Air Plug ON)

With the air plug installed, the Performer 8S sits in a controlled, slightly warm-neutral zone. It does not shout for attention. It organizes the playback. Vocals emerge textured but not sharp. Upper mids are present yet restrained. Stage height stands out before width. It feels like a tall hall rather than a stretched panorama. Layering is its core strength. Complex passages do not smear. You can track piano notes individually at high tempo. Guitar resonance overlaps without turning into blur. Bass guitar remains anchored, slightly lateralized.
Bass – Depth Over Hype
Sub-bass reaches properly low. It is not bloated. It is not mid-bass boosted. It carries pressure rather than thickness. On Infected Mushroom, sub presence feels physical but disciplined. On Skrillex’s Bangarang, the impact is explosive yet structured. The Performer 8S does not collapse into single-frequency dominance. Mid-bass is clean and tight. No excessive warmth bleeding into lower mids. This gives it clarity but prevents “fun tuning” coloration.
Midrange – Structured & Articulate
The midrange is where the Performer 8S feels deliberate. Male vocals carry texture. Female vocals maintain separation without glassiness. There is micro-articulation. You hear syllable gaps. Breath texture appears naturally. Importantly, mids do not collapse when bass hits. They remain structurally independent.
Treble – Controlled Extension
Treble with plug ON is controlled. Not dark. Not overly airy. Cymbals are present but rounded. Upper harmonics extend without sharp glare. Long sessions remain fatigue-free. However, you see a different face of the P8S after plug OFF. The treble reminded me the Yanyin Canon’s.
Air Plug OFF – Structural Transformation
Removing the air plug (tape actually) shifts internal pressure balance. Upper mids lift immediately. Clarity increases. Stage opens. Presentation becomes more forward. However, tonal temperature cools. Attacks sharpen. Cymbal edges gain bite. Some listeners may perceive slight sterility. Depth perception increases alongside brightness. Layer spacing becomes more defined. This is not simple brightness boost. It is structural exposure.
Cayin N8ii Impressions – Scaling & Character Shift

Moving from the HiBy R4 to the Cayin N8ii changes the conversation immediately. The Performer 8S clearly responds to higher-end amplification.
In solid-state Class A mode, the stage gains stability. Micro-dynamic contrast improves. Bass tightens noticeably. Sub extension feels more elastic rather than simply deep.
Upper mids smooth slightly compared to R4 plug-off configuration. The sharpness becomes refinement. Transient edges remain fast but more controlled.
Switching to Tube mode (Class A), the presentation shifts again. Midrange gains density. Vocals feel more dimensional. Not warmer in a bloated sense — more textural.
Air plug OFF + Tube mode creates an interesting synergy: clarity remains, but the sterility risk disappears. Depth becomes more layered. Front-to-back placement improves.
This confirms something important: the Performer 8S scales. It is not flat across sources. It rewards better chains.
Imaging & Soundstage
The stage is not artificially wide. It is structured. Height is strong. Width expands notably with air plug removed.
Imaging precision is one of its most impressive technical traits. In complex metal passages, individual guitars maintain position without collapsing. Kick drum stays centered. Bass guitar holds lateral placement.
Electronic tracks reveal cross layers or sub pressure and upper harmonic resonance remain distinct yet connected. That connection is crucial. Many IEMs either smear or disconnect those layers. The 8S keeps them coherent.
Tip Rolling Impressions
Stock Tips
Balanced. Slight warmth with plug on. Controlled clarity with plug off. Stage moderate but stable.
Included Alternate Silicone Tips
These slightly reduce mid warmth. Upper mids become more exposed. Stage width improves marginally. Bass tightens but loses a bit of body.

Wider Bore Style
Brighter overall perception. Air increases. Risk of crispiness grows with plug off. Better suited for darker sources.
Interestingly, even without aftermarket tips, the Performer 8S already delivers a mild “speaker-like” openness. This tells me internal acoustic design is doing heavy lifting.
Plug ON vs Plug OFF – Direct Comparison
| Aspect | Plug ON | Plug OFF |
|---|---|---|
| Tonal Balance | Slightly warm-neutral | Cooler, more analytical |
| Stage | Tall & structured | Wider & more forward |
| Upper Mids | Controlled | Lifted, more exposed |
| Bass Integrity | Full & grounded | Maintained, slightly tighter |
| Long Listening | Safer | Depends on chain synergy |

Scaling Behavior
With moderate power sources, the Performer 8S performs well. But higher current delivery improves:
- Micro-dynamic contrast
- Sub-bass elasticity
- Front-to-back depth layering
- Upper-mid refinement
It is not a “plug into phone and forget” IEM. Balanced output and proper amplification matter.
Overall Character Summary
The AFUL Performer 8S is not warm and romantic. It is not sterile and cold either. It is structured, layered, adaptable.
Plug ON = cohesion, comfort, balance. Plug OFF = openness, articulation, exposure.
Most importantly: when its acoustic condition changes, the tuning reshapes without collapsing. That shows internal structural stability.
Pros
- Adaptable Tuning
The air plug on/off system meaningfully changes the character. Its not a single-frequency tuning, but balanced and dynamic. - Layering & Separation
Strong layered presentation with the ability to keep instruments distinct even in complex passages. - Bass Depth Without Bloat
Deep sub-bass and controlled mid-bass provide impact without bleeding into the midrange. - Structured Imaging & Stage
Tall stage structure with precise imaging; instrument placement remains stable and well-defined. - Scales With Source
The character opens up further with stronger sources (such as Cayin N8ii). - Tip Rolling Friendly
Presentation changes noticeably with different eartips, offering flexibility beyond stock configuration. - Low Listening Fatigue (Plug ON)
With plug ON, the tuning remains balanced and suitable for long listening sessions without fatigue. - Musical Yet Technical
Maintains emotional engagement while delivering strong detail retrieval.
❌ Cons
- Upper-Mid Sensitivity (Plug OFF)
With plug OFF, treble becomes more forward; some listeners may perceive a cooler tonal character. - Not a Basshead Tuning
Sub-bass is present, but those seeking exaggerated mid-bass punch may find it restrained. - Source Dependent
Performs well on moderate power, but micro-dynamics and refinement improve with higher-quality sources. - Crispiness Risk With Some Tips
Wider bore or brighter tips combined with plug OFF may push upper mids too far for sensitive listeners. - Not Warm & Romantic
Those who prefer thick, lush, and overtly warm tunings may find it slightly cool in tone.
Final Verdict
The AFUL Performer 8S is a technically grounded IEM with genuine adaptability. Its air plug system is not a gimmick. It meaningfully shifts tonal balance and spatial perception. With HiBy R4, it already performs strongly. With Cayin N8ii, it reveals its higher ceiling. It is not for bass addicts chasing mid-bass thickness. It is for listeners who want articulation, separation, and the ability to fine-tune presentation through acoustic control.
In the right chain, the Performer 8S stops being impressive and starts being convincing or real.
