Comparison of FiiO QX13 and Questyle M18i
Why Compare FiiO QX13 and Questyle M18i?
Both the FiiO QX13 and the Questyle M18i are modern, high-performance USB dongle DAC/amps aimed at audiophiles who want powerful sound in a portable form. They’re priced in a similar range, marketed toward serious listeners, and support both single-ended and balanced outputs. On paper, they do the same job — but in real-world listening, their approaches are very different.
Table Of Content
The M18i uses current-mode amplification, a method Questyle is known for, promising cleaner transients, more precise control, and a darker, reference-like presentation. The QX13, meanwhile, is a more recent release from FiiO with a desktop mode feature and a more musical, forgiving sound signature. Since both claim to deliver desktop-level sound in your pocket — and both are capable of driving demanding IEMs and headphones — it’s natural to ask:
Which one actually delivers what you’re looking for in daily use?
This comparison was done using the same track, same source, and same IEM (Tanchjim x EA Force), to show how differently each dongle handles resolution, tone, staging, and synergy. The goal isn’t just to list specs — it’s to show how they behave with real music in real setups.

🎧 Questyle M18i – Dark, Strong, Clear
When used with the Force, M18i immediately shows its character. The stage feels like it’s placed up front. The presentation is dark but detailed. There’s a kind of authority in the low frequencies. Bass hits are neither blurry nor scattered — they come in clearly. You can hear the beginning and end of each note, even slightly sharp.
Toto’s vocal sounds very full. Tonally rich, alive, and thick. Not just the vocal — all background elements in the track can be picked out individually. Force is a detail-sensitive IEM, and M18i reveals its potential fully. Especially the synth-trombone effect I always use as a benchmark is heard clearly. It’s not buried or held back. It just appears easily.
🎧 FiiO QX13 – Smooth, Balanced, Musical
First I listened to QX13 in normal mode. Compared to M18i, the detail level is lower. But the tone is warmer and smoother. Even a slightly aggressive IEM like Force becomes softer with QX13. It smooths the edges and makes it more polite. This makes it easier to listen to even with harsh tracks.
But in terms of detail, it falls behind. The benchmark trombone I hear clearly with M18i is here too, but less obvious. It’s more buried. The vocal is also full, but it’s slightly behind and warmer. The whole presentation is more laid-back and rounded.
🎧 QX13 – When Desktop Mode is Enabled
When I switched QX13 into desktop mode, things changed. Resolution increased, stage widened, and space between instruments became clearer. Bass got punchier and more controlled. In desktop mode, QX13 starts to show itself. It’s still not as firm as M18i, but more fun to listen to.
Vocals are still warm, treble still polite, but the overall sound becomes more open and layered. Details like the synth-trombone start to pop out a bit more, but still not as clear as M18i.
Conclusion of FiiO QX13 vs Questyle M18i Comparison Writeup
M18i is technically stronger. With its power, clarity, and control, it gets full performance out of Force. Details are clear, the presentation is dark but full. More of a reference character.
QX13, on the other hand, is more musical. It smooths harshness, makes Force calmer. Easier to listen to in the long run. When desktop mode is enabled, resolution and stage improve a lot, but it’s still not as tight as M18i.
