HiBy R3 II 2025: Exceptional Performance with IEMs

• Processor: 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 (6nm process)

• DAC: Dual Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs

• Amplification: 700mW + 700mW output power

• Screen: 4.7-inch high-resolution display

• Battery Life: 12-hour playback time

• Operating System: Android 13

• Audio Outputs: 4.4mm balanced + 3.5mm single-ended headphone jacks

• Connectivity: Supports SPDIF and USB audio output

• Special Feature: Proprietary DAP system with SRC (Sample Rate Conversion) bypass

The JM21 appears to be a powerful and efficient audio player, leveraging modern technologies for both high-quality playback and versatile connectivity. Its use of the Snapdragon 680 ensures a balanced mix of performance and battery efficiency. With dual CS43198 DACs, it targets audiophiles who demand accurate sound reproduction. The combination of 4.4mm and 3.5mm outputs makes it flexible enough to drive a wide range of headphones and IEMs.

Insights into the JM21

The Jade Audio JM21 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor, which provides efficient performance. It features a 4.7-inch display, paired with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, expandable via a MicroSD card. For connectivity, the device supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1, with compatibility for SBC, AAC, LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LHDC codecs. The audio architecture is enhanced by a dual Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chipset, delivering high-resolution sound through both a 3.5mm single-ended and a 4.4mm balanced output.

Running on Android 13, the JM21 weighs 156 grams and includes USB-C input for charging and data transfer. Its estimated power output reaches 2Vrms (single-ended) and 4Vrms (balanced), with a projected 700mW + 700mW capability. The device is intended to operate both as a standalone Android player and a USB DAC, with pricing around 1300 yuan (approximately $180-$190 USD). Overall, the JM21 reflects a solid upgrade from previous FiiO models, especially with its modern DAC implementation and software.

The estimated 700mW + 700mW output indicates that the JM21 can handle demanding IEMs and even moderately difficult headphones, though it’s still more of a portable solution rather than a full desktop-class DAC/amp replacement. With support for both Android and USB DAC modes, it caters to users who want a hybrid device that works as a media player on the go and as a USB DAC when connected to other devices.

Prophecies about the JM21’s Impact

The JM21 reflects a shift in the DAP market where high-quality audio devices need to offer both hi-fi performance and modern features. The use of Android 13 ensures app compatibility for years to come, setting a new standard for longevity in DAPs. With dual Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chipset, it positions itself at the intersection of enthusiast-grade sound and portability.

Expect this model to influence both DAP manufacturers and audiophiles toward more compact, versatile devices that don’t compromise on audio quality. It signals a future where standalone DAPs evolve into hybrid devices that function as both high-end audio tools and multimedia players. The impact could also be seen in encouraging broader adoption of balanced outputs, nudging users toward gear that demands more power but offers better audio fidelity.

However, the Snapdragon 680 may act as a bottleneck in terms of future-proofing against more intensive applications, indicating that future DAPs may need stronger processors without compromising battery life.

The JM21 could be part of a larger trend toward compact, multi-functional digital audio players (DAPs) that bridge the gap between smartphones and high-end audio setups. Its positioning as a device with significant audio capabilities but still portable in size suggests it could open the door for more users to explore high-quality audio formats without committing to bulkier, desktop-level gear.

Who is the JM21 for?

• Audiophiles Seeking Portability: Ideal for users who want high-end audio performance without carrying bulky desktop setups or daps like Cayin N8ii or Fiio m17

• Streaming Enthusiasts: Those who rely heavily on Spotify, Tidal, or Qobuz will benefit from Android 13 and Wi-Fi 5 integration.

• Balanced Output Users: Those with balanced IEMs or headphones will find the 4.4mm output a great addition.

• USB DAC Users: Perfect for people who want a hybrid device that can double as a DAC when connected to a PC or phone.

Who is the JM21 not for?

• Casual Listeners: If your primary audio source is a smartphone, the JM21 may feel like overkill.

• Heavy Offline Music Collectors: With only 32 GB of internal storage, it’s not ideal for users with large offline libraries unless they heavily rely on microSD cards.

• Power-Hungry Headphone Users: While the 700mW output is impressive for a portable DAP, it might struggle to properly drive very high-impedance headphones.

• Users Seeking Cutting-Edge Performance: Audiophiles who prioritize the latest tech may find the Snapdragon 680 limiting in the long run.

In summary, the JM21 fills a niche for mobile audiophiles who want an all-round device with strong audio performance and streaming capabilities. It points toward a future where multi-functionality and compact design define the DAP landscape, although it may leave some users wanting more in terms of processing power and storage.

“Heavy Offline Music Collectors: With only 32 GB of internal storage, it’s not ideal for users with large offline libraries unless they heavily rely on microSD cards.”

This reproach of yours seems strange to me. It gives the impression as if, in the case of most other DAPs, storage for music is handled differently than a memory card. Apart from being a more practical solution (the card is portable between multiple devices), it is a solution that is widely accepted as the absolute standard among DAPs. The internal memory (32Gb in this case) is basically just a space for Android and apps.

I see your point. 32 is the standart yeah, but the real HQ music means dsd256 or 512. And albums recorded at or upsampled to those qualities take more than 5 or 10 gb at the storage, hence I stated that

Most people these days have smartphones, many with better fundamental specs than this device. So why should people buy this DAP instead of a good DAC/Amp for $200 or so?
What can this DAP do better than such a phone+DAC combination?

Your question is straight forward to understand. The answer is solely based on this devices actual performance and comparisons against some some hitters etc.

Because those are mediocre compared to an actual dap

I actually don’t have an idea, but given its performance when loaded with a microsd card full with 200 gb of tracks, it might be true. You are talking about a DAP with a 256 GB card limit. Expectations shall be adjusted accordingly.
