HiBy has built a strong reputation with its DAPs, and the 2025 version of the R3 II feels like another step forward. Testing it with the Letshuoer S12 through Qobuz, one thing immediately stands out—the 4.4mm balanced output. It adds a noticeable sense of depth and refinement, making the listening experience more engaging and immersive.

Right out of the box, the R3 II 2025 feels well-built and intuitive. The interface is smooth, the sound leans toward a natural and musical presentation, and everything flows effortlessly. It’s too early to call it a game-changer, but so far, it’s showing all the right signs of being a solid, compact DAP that prioritizes enjoyment over sterile technicality. More to come in the full review.

Disclaimer: This unit is sent from Hiby to launch its Turkey tour. I thank Hiby and AG for the possibility.

Sound Signature of HiBy R3 II 2025

The HiBy R3 II 2025 leans towards a neutral sound signature. It offers a wide playback stage, though not harshly defined; its rounded edges create a large but fatigue-free listening experience. Both the soundstage width and detail projection are well-calibrated for its price point. Its slam factor, referring to the impactful delivery of bass frequencies, is satisfying.

In High Gain mode, a volume level of 75-80/100 provided adequate power to drive the Letshuoer S12. There is a slight hint of sibilance, where the treble “s” sounds can occasionally stand out. Yet, the overall neutrality combined with the S12’s critical listening capabilities made tracks like Victor Wooten’s “Classical Thump” an absolute pleasure. The detailed interplay of bass strings comes alive, giving the impression of being right in front of a virtuoso performance.

Technical Specifications and 4.4mm Output

The technical specs of the HiBy R3 II showcase its compact yet powerful design, equipped with a solid DAC and amplifier section. The fixed 4.4mm balanced output, in particular, could be a game-changer in terms of detail projection and dynamic range. I’ll explore its performance with both low- and high-impedance IEMs in the full review.

Performance at Different IEMs

Track: Toto – Africa

ND – Venus: After the wide, immersive opening, the playback settles into a strong, well-balanced foundation. Bass is punchy yet controlled, with a dark timbre and no sibilance. The guitar enters with great transparency, cutting through naturally. Technically, everything is well-rounded—neither overly analytical nor lacking—delivering a smooth and engaging experience.

• ND – Planet: The bass in the intro has a subtle presence. The flow remains smooth, with a faint warmth in the background. Edges feel softened rather than sharp. The soundstage isn’t constricted, and the musicality stands out.

• Hifiman RE-600: The HiBy R3 II 2025 surprised me with how organic and musical it sounds. Clarity is an added bonus. It feels like every edge in the playback has been softened, making Toto’s voice gain a more 3D-like presence near me.

• Letshuoer S12: The realism in Africa is striking. It delivers a fully professional performance, and the HiBy R3 II 2025 gives it everything it needs. But to be fair, if it had more power, the presentation would feel fuller and more energetic. That said, the clarity, transparency, and the sharp presence of the trombones all make it clear that this IEM does justice to this classic song.

• EA x Elysian Audio Pilgrim: Time to shift gears. This is my final stop before heading into over-ear territory. Okay, maybe I’ll ease into it with the Focal MG first and work up a sweat.

This is the most satisfying playback I’ve heard so far. It feels like Toto is singing directly to me. But not just that—everything is ultra clear, and the upper treble spices up the track perfectly. Being a semi-open IEM, the stage is incredibly wide. Details are front and center, and the transparency is downright stunning.

Over-ear sessions are officially underway. First up: Distant Mountain—a retro-looking, semi-open headphone that punches above its price tag.

HiBy R3 II 2025 and Distant Mountain

This is one of the most natural and effortless playbacks I’ve heard. The timbre is warm, and the background is dark. Clarity is high. Even with the HiBy R3 II 2025 pushed near max volume on high gain, there’s no distortion. But to be fair, it doesn’t quite create that “rain-calling man surrounded by the African atmosphere” effect that the S12 and Pilgrim managed so effortlessly.

Sony Pulse 3D

I’m looking at a Sony headset with both cable and BT capability (exclusive to PS5). From the start, there is a warm, distant, and even muffled playback. But strangely enough, it is possible to pick out the lyrics when you focus. And the synth’s treble works well.

Focal Clear MG

Natural and refined playback. But it’s a bit hazy. Maybe it’s because I’ve heard more clarity in the earbuds. Transparency is low to not bad. The resolution of the bass rhythms is high. Tonality is definitely good! So far so good. But these notes were taken at low volume. I had 100/100 volume on the device at the time. I think we have seen the upper limit of the HiBy R3 II 2025.

Pros & Cons – HiBy R3 II 2025 Review

✅ Pros:

  • Organic and musical sound signature
  • Excellent clarity with a natural presentation
  • Smooth, well-rounded playback with no harsh edges
  • Compact and portable design
  • Strong synergy with a variety of IEMs and headphones

❌ Cons:

  • Lacks a bit of raw power for more demanding headphones
  • The UI, while functional, could be smoother
  • Some might prefer a more analytical tuning

HiBy R3 II 2025 Review Conclusions

The HiBy R3 II 2025 Review is showing an improved dap, which strikes an impressive balance between musicality and clarity, delivering an organic, engaging listening experience. It refines its predecessor’s strengths, offering a smoother, more cohesive presentation with a natural tonality that makes every track feel effortless.

While it may not have the brute force needed for power-hungry headphones, it excels with IEMs and moderately efficient over-ears. Its compact form factor and well-implemented tuning make it a solid choice for those who prioritize musical enjoyment over sheer technicality. If you’re looking for a portable DAP that makes your music sound fluid and immersive without fatigue, the R3 II is an easy recommendation.
