The FiiO KA11 is a small and affordable USB DAC/Amplifier dongle aimed at mobile audio fans. Don’t be fooled by its size… this small dongle packs a huge punch and provides great sound quality and value for money while sticking to the company’s aims of innovative design, dependable quality and a high cost to performance ratio!

Disclaimer:

I have to note that this review was written thanks to FiiO, which provided for me this unit. And while I appreciate their assistance in providing the KA11, please be sure that the opinions stated here are all my own and are based on my own testing and experience with the product! My goal is to give you all honest and transparent reviews.

Introduction

FiiO is a leading company in the audio industry and they continue to innovate with their latest product, the FiiO KA11. Building on the popularity of its predecessor, the KA1, which was released in 2022. Now the KA11 prioritizes downsizing while keeping great audio quality! This small form factor appeals to those who want a truly portable solution without losing audio quality! And I will add that the KA1 and KA11 will coexist for some time, so you can still choose which one you want.

Addressing the Dongle Market Demand:

FiiO recognizes the growing popularity of USB dongles as an essential tool for wired headphone use, as nowadays smartphones lack headphone jacks. Now they employ their experience and skills to create dependable and user friendly DAC such as this one. The KA11 embodies this idea and seeking to “achieve more with less” by delivering considerable sound quality improvements in a small physical factor.

Unboxing

When I received the FiiO KA11, I immediately liked its clean design. The box itself has its basic yet eye catching design. when I opened the box there was the KA11, which was snugly packed within to protect its safety during travel. Along with the dongle, I saw the user manual and warranty information. However, I was surprised to see that the package did not include a Type A to Type C adapter, which I had expected… Despite this tiny drawback, the unboxing process was enjoyable.

Compact and Portable Design:

Measuring in at a mere 110mm long and weighing only 8.5 grams, the KA11 is one of the most portable DACs on the market. Its lightweight aluminum-magnesium alloy construction provides durability without adding bulk. The cable is made of high-purity oxygen-free palladium-plated copper wires and covered by a layer of flexible silicone and braided cloth, making it very durable. Its size makes it perfect for slipping into your pocket or backpack. The KA11 is a practical and stylish option that comes in sleek black or silver with light blue accent finishes.

FiiO KA11: First of its kind

Impressive Power Output and High-Res Audio Support:

Despite its small size, the KA11 produces 245mW of power at 16Ω, outperforming most competitors in its price range! This allows it to easily drive even a bit more demanding headphones and IEMs. It also supports high resolution audio formats like as 384kHz/32-bit PCM and DSD256 and it ensures compatibility with big music library while providing amazing detail and clarity.

Independent DAC and Amp for Superior Sound:

KA11 is unique in its use of an independent CS43131 DAC and SGM8262 Amplifier, unlike many competitor dongles. This dedicated circuitry contributes to its impressive sound quality by ensuring accurate digital-to-analog conversion and powerful amplification. The way they were able to put so much into such a small thing is truly impressive and special, and it is highly praised.

Multiple Connectivity Options:

The KA11 is available in two versions. A USB-C connector and one with a Lightning connector. This makes it compatible with both Android and iOS devices.

Exceptional Value for Money:

Given its power output, high-fidelity sound, and mobility, the KA11 is an excellent value! the KA11 is only $29, it’s an appealing dongle for budget audiophiles who are looking to significantly improve their mobile listening experience.

Minor Drawbacks:

While the KA11 excels in most aspects, there are a couple of minor drawbacks to consider. The cable is permanently attached, limiting future upgradeability. Additionally, the USB-C version doesn’t include a Type A adapter, requiring an adapter for connecting to computers without USB C ports…

FiiO APP:

The FiiO KA11 comes with a app that gives you control and customization. The FiiO Control app allows to turn the light indicator on and off. And even more ! The app gives five filter options, each changes a bit the audio output according to the preferences.

These filters include:

  • 1 – Minimum Phase Fast Roll-off,
  • 2 – Fast Roll-off Phase-compensated,
  • 3 – Minimum Phase Slow Roll-off,
  • 4 – Slow Roll-off Phase-compensated,
  • 5 – Non Over-sampling filters.

While each filter subtly alters the sound signature, the KA11 maintains a hint of warmth throughout. Getting it on a 29$ dongle is very impressive.

FiiO KA11 Performance

Balanced and Natural Sound Signature:

I would say that unlike some other budget DACs the KA11 adheres to a pretty natural sound signature. And it actually produces rather precise and realistic audio reproduction, allowing the nuances of your song to show. The KA11’s well balanced and natural sound allows it to bring a powerful bass, clear vocals, and well defined highs with a slight warm and natural touch. I’ll also point out that the KA11 works well with brighter IEMs, such as the Simgot EA500, and adds some warmth to them.

Bass: The KA11 produces powerful bass which adds depth and intensity to the music! so, whether you’re listening to electronic music or orchestral works, I can definitely say that the KA11’s bass reproduction is tight and controlled, which improves the listening experience.

Midrange: Vocals and instruments are presented with lifelike clarity and richness, capturing every detail and emotion. And from the voice of your favorite vocalist to the melodies of acoustic instruments, the KA11’s midrange presentation keeps itself engaging and very immersive!

Highs: The KA11’s treble presentation is a bit laid back, but still reveals intricate details and adds sparkle to the overall sound signature. Whether it’s the shimmering cymbals in a jazz ensemble or the delicate harmonics of a classical violin, the treble performance of the KA11 remains articulate and refined.

Imagine: The KA11 creates a spacious and pinpoint-accurate stage, allowing for precise instrument placement and separation. Whether you’re listening to an intimate acoustic performance or a grand orchestral arrangement, the KA11’s stage reproduction remains expansive and three dimensional.

Conclusion

So after all this, I really think that the FiiO KA11 is a true testament to the saying that good things come in small packages! This pocket sized powerhouse shows the brand’s commitment to innovation. And It delivers surprisingly high quality sound, which is also able power more demanding headphones, and additionally can work with wide platform of devices, all at an unbeatable price. With its minor drawbacks easily overshadowed by its strengths, the KA11 is a surefire recommendation for anyone seeking a portable and affordable way to elevate their mobile audio experience.

Pros:

  • Outstanding power output of 245mW at 16Ω
  • Excellent value proposition at just $29
  • Great sound signature with dynamic bass and expressive midrange
  • Choice of USB-C or Lightning connectors for versatility
  • Sturdy build quality with aluminum-magnesium alloy chassis
  • Compact and lightweight design for portability

Cons:

  • Non-detachable cable (it is intended, but still a downside)
  • Lack of USB a Type-A to USB Type-C adapter for computer connectivity
  • Lack of precise volume control (limited to the steps of the source)
