KZ EDX LITE – CHEAP AND CHEERFUL

INTRODUCTION:

KZ, the brand based in China needs no introduction in the first place since it’s an already acclaimed brand among the audiophiles and general consumers out there. The EDX, EDX Pro and EDXS being their ancestral products, KZ has decided to cut down the price even more and launched the product named EDX Lite. That’s the product in our hands today and let’s check out in detail through the following sections.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Sensitivity: 108+-3dB

Frequency Response: 20-40000Hz

Pin Type: 2 Pin 0.75mm

Impedance: 23+3ohms

SOUND OVERVIEW:

EDX Lite is equipped with a single 10mm Dynamic Driver that provides a neatly laid out V shaped signature that provides a wide scene with good presence of details. The provided stock cable is just average with the usual starline ear tips from the KZ. The shell is made out of resin and for the price the sound is actually amazing!

BASS ANALYSIS:

  1. The bass here digs deeper providing enough presence for both the sub and mid bass profiles.
  2. The sub bass provides the adequate rumbles that creates a nice ethereal environment to the presentation.
  3. The mid bass has a good thump and the fullness making the presentation appear thicker.
  4. The kick drums and the snare drums get proper attention allowing them to take presence in the scene.
  5. The distinction between the sub and mid bass section is good but not to the point of stellar. Still a bit of clash can be seen between both the frequencies.
  6. The speed is on the moderate side where it’s neither too slow nor fast enough.
  7. Overall, the bass is authoritative, fuller and near to bass head level. A bit more distinction between the sub and mid bass profiles would have made the presence even better.

MID SECTION ANALYSIS:

  1. The presentation feels nice and forward with engaging vocal presence.
  2. The whole scene appears wide and represents a nice grandeur staging for this price.
  3. The lower midsection gets proper warmth from the mid bass profile allowing the male vocals to shine.
  4. The upper mid-section is elevated noticeably which leads the EDX Lite to the borderline sibilance. This makes the female vocals trouble the listeners a bit due to their sharper notes.

TREBLE SECTION ANALYSIS:

  1. There’s a noticeable elevation in the treble leading to an adequate brightness to the overall presentation.
  2. The detail retrieval is surprisingly good for its price where this does feel vivid and clean enough.
  3. The cymbal crashes have a proper timing leading to a natural presence.
  4. The notes in the treble section slightly feel sharper making them appear edgy in certain scenarios.

TECHNICALITIES:

STAGING AND IMAGING: EDX Lite has a wide scene presence representing a good width and height to the staging. This eventually made the imaging and the layering. The transient response feels smoother with no stutters in between the channels. The placement of the instruments appears to be precise.

TONE AND TIMBRE: The biggest flaw for me in the EDX Lite is the tone and timbre where this appears dry and slightly metallic. This made the vocals lack the lushness.

DETAIL RETRIEVAL: The EDX Lite is able to extract the essential nuances out of the track yet needs improvement over this aspect.

VERDICT:

EDX Lite, the latest budget offering from the house of KZ did a great job by delivering a dynamic V shaped signature accompanied with a lot of fun. The EDX Lite is equipped with a single 10mm dynamic driver enclosed in a resin body and comes with the usual KZ starline ear tips in the box.

The dynamic V shaped signature is not a new thing to be observed in the budget chi-fi yet the KZ did a great job in executing this with some flaws too.

The sound appears vivid and dynamic with an authoritative bass profile, forwardly placed engaging mid-section and a bright enough treble section. The highlighting aspect of this version is the bigger scene presence which enabled the layering and imaging to be great for the price.

The biggest flaw in the EDX Lite is the tone and timbre which appears dry and slightly metallic. The added extension onto the upper mid section made the presentation enter the borderline sibilance area.

The KZ EDX Lite is a CHEAP AND CHEERFUL package that one can expect from its price. Yet with its flaws in TONE this does take up its place among the competitors in its price range.

POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES:

Pros:

  1. Dynamic and Vivid Profile
  2. Wider Scene
  3. Authoritative Bass Profile
  4. Price

Cons:

  1. Dry and Metallic Tone & Timbre
  2. Elevated Upper Mid Profile
