Cayin N8ii Review

The Cayin N8ii is a standout device in the world of portable music players, renowned for its sound quality and technological innovations. In this review, I’ll delve into the sound quality, technical features, and overall performance of the Cayin N8ii. This device, with its unique ability to handle high-resolution audio files and tube amplification, is a perfect choice for music enthusiasts. Its robust build, large screen, and user-friendly interface enhance the music listening experience.

Unboxed and Specs

From a mechanical standpoint, the Cayin N8ii feels solid. The moment I picked it up, I could feel the that solid build quality. The CNC-machined aluminum chassis not only gives it a premium feel but also ensures durability. The tactile feedback from the PVD gold-plated brass volume knob is satisfying, adding a touch of luxury to every interaction. The design is clearly thought out, with a weight that balances well in hand, making it feel substantial without being cumbersome

The thermal management system of the N8ii is particularly impressive. During long listening sessions, the device stays within comfortable temperature ranges, thanks to its well-designed heat dissipation features. The nickel silver plate and graphite sheet efficiently transfer heat away from the core components, preventing overheating even during intensive use. This is crucial when utilizing the powerful dual ROHM DACs and Korg Nutube technology, which can generate significant heat. I can enjoy continuous high-quality audio without worrying about the device overheating thanks to the careful integration of these materials and design choices.

One of the standout mechanical features is the versatility of its output options. The N8ii offers both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced line outs, which completely bypass the headphone amplification circuit. This makes it incredibly versatile, allowing me to use it with various setups, including active speakers and desktop amplifiers. The configurable output levels for both outputs mean I can fine-tune the device to match the input impedance of different audio systems perfectly. This level of flexibility is rare and highly appreciated, as it ensures the N8ii integrates seamlessly into any audio environment I choose.

One of the features that caught my attention about the Cayin N8ii is its Android-based (9 :/ ) operating system. This enhances the device’s flexibility and ease of use with endless software installations, UAPP, Qobuz, ldac codec and so forth) Additionally, the various power modes allow me to personalize my listening experience. The Cayin N8ii’s high performance meets all the requirements I have for a portable music player.,

Sound Quality and Technological Features

The Cayin N8ii offers excellent performance in terms of sound quality, targeting audio enthusiasts. This device provides a unique sound experience by using dual Korg Nutube vacuum tubes and dual ROHM DACs. When compared to conventional vacuum tubes, nutube technology uses less energy while maintaining the tubes’ natural and warm sound qualities. These features provide a noticeable softness and depth, especially in vocals and acoustic instruments.

 Tube Amplification

The most notable feature of the Cayin N8ii is its use of Korg 6P1 Nutube tubes. These tubes add a rich warmth and an analog timbre to the audio signal. Based on my experience, these tubes bring a different vibrancy and depth to the music. Particularly when listening to jazz and classical music, the warmth and natural timbre provided by the tubes make the listening experience highly enjoyable.

 High-Resolution DAC

The Cayin N8ii’s dual ROHM DACs (Digital-Analog Converters) can seamlessly process high-resolution audio files (DSD512 and PCM 32bit/768kHz). This provides a wide dynamic range and an outstanding level of detail. Based on my experiences, while listening to music with high-resolution files, I can hear sharp and clear details across the entire frequency spectrum with Class AB and ROHMs. This feature becomes particularly evident in the high frequencies and allows me to capture all the nuances of the music.

Balanced and SE Outputs

The Cayin N8ii offers both balanced (4.4mm Pentaconn and 3.5mm) and single-ended (3.5mm) output options. Balanced output provides a cleaner and more powerful sound with enhanced channel separation and low background noise. This allows instruments and vocals to be more distinct and organized, especially in complex music tracks. By using these output options, I experimented with different headphones and achieved clear and powerful sound each time.

 Sound Signature and EQ Potential

The sound signature of the Cayin N8ii is defined by its balanced and natural tonality, exceptional detail retrieval, and dynamic range. It excels in delivering a sound that is both balanced and natural, with no particular frequency overpowering the others. This neutrality makes it suitable for a wide range of music genres, allowing each element in the recording to be heard clearly without coloration. One of its standout features is its ability to retrieve fine details within the music. The dual ROHM DACs contribute to its high level of precision, making every nuance in the recording apparent. The device provides a clear and pristine sound with excellent separation and layering, ensuring that even the most complex pieces of music are rendered with clarity.

The Cayin N8ii offers impressive dynamics, making music feel lively and engaging. The inclusion of Korg Nutube technology adds a touch of warmth and musicality, particularly in tube mode, enhancing the richness and depth of the sound. This mode is especially appreciated for genres like jazz and classical, where the natural timbre of instruments and vocals can be fully appreciated. The device features different amplification modes (Class A and Class AB) and power settings (P and P+). The P+ mode increases output power and provides a more saturated sound signature, which is particularly beneficial for driving high-impedance headphones. This versatility allows users to tailor the sound to their preferences and the requirements of their headphones.

In summary, the Cayin N8ii offers a sound signature that is highly detailed, balanced, and dynamically rich, with the flexibility to adapt to various listening preferences and equipment. It combines technical excellence with musicality, making it a top choice for audiophiles seeking a high-end portable audio player.

Power Modes: Power and Power Plus

Using the “Power” and “Power Plus” power settings offered by the Cayin N8ii, I can customize the performance of my audio device according to my personal needs. The Power mode provides high sound quality even with lower energy consumption. On the other hand, the Power Plus mode offers higher output power for high-impedance headphones, delivering a dynamic and detailed sound experience. I particularly prefer the Power Plus mode for complex orchestral pieces or live recordings. By switching between these modes, I can select the most suitable power setting according to the type of music I am listening to and the headphones or audio system I am using.

 Overall Sound Performance___

The Cayin N8ii’s sound performance is extremely impressive. The warmth of tube amplification and the clarity of the ROHM DACs provide rich and balanced sound. Every music genre, from vocals to instrumentals and complex orchestral works, is processed with accuracy and richness. Every type of music I listen to with this device reveals details and depths I had never heard before. The Cayin N8ii has completely changed my music listening experience and habits.

 Line Out Mode

The Line Out mode is typically used to connect to an amplifier. However, when the LO Gain is set to Low, it comfortably powers the 600 Ohm AKG K240 headphones. In this mode, the sound quality is exceptional, with clear and distinct details across all music genres. However, the dynamic range might be slightly reduced. Therefore, I also tested the same headphones in SE mode, which offered a different experience.

 600 Ohm Response

The tube amplifier really shines when it has a high gain and a volume selection of 65/100. When it comes to “Roadhouse Blues,” the Cayin N8ii conveys every single aspect with an extraordinary level of detail. It is a one-of-a-kind listening experience because to the 3D imaging quality of the harmonica and the location of Morrison’s voice towards the background. The song “Sweet Home Chicago” by Eric Clapton is another one that is impressive since it is a musical feast that is full of subtleties.

 Live Recordings and Venue Impact__

The true test of any high-end audio device is its ability to handle live recordings IMO. The Cayin N8ii excels in this regard. When listening to live performances, knowing the recording venue and its acoustics adds an extra layer of appreciation. For instance, no regular recording compares to those at Aya Irini, an ancient church in Istanbul known for its incredible acoustics. The Cayin N8ii captures the grandeur and reverberation of such venues beautifully.

Similarly, recordings from Harbiye Açık Hava, an open-air theatre, provide a unique listening experience. The Cayin N8ii delivers these performances with such clarity and detail that it feels like being there in person. The spatial cues and ambient sounds are rendered with precision, making each listening session an immersive experience.

Comparison: Cayin N8ii vs. Fiio M17

While the Fiio M17 isn’t fully considered a portable music player, I wanted to evaluate it since it was on hand for review. The M17 requires its over-ear headphone mode to be enabled to produce enough power for 600 Ohm headphones. This mode is above the H gain setting, and at 90/120 volume, it delivers a full playback. However, in symphonic metal with massive playback, it achieves only slightly above average results at 80/120 volume and an ultra high gain equivalent setting. The crucial factor is not just the sound’s volume but also how encompassing the resistance’s drivers are able to make it.

When it comes to metal music, the situation doesn’t change much even when softened to rock. Especially the tonal shift in the bass guitar and slight nasal vocals mudding up during the song’s attack are disappointing. Meanwhile, the Cayin N8ii provides full playback at 50/100 volume in H gain, Class AB, and normal P settings with 600 Ohm headphones, achieving a level the M17 cannot. At least for smooth jazz, the N8ii serves well in monitoring, but to ensure fairness, let’s switch genres.

Starting with symphonic metal, the Cayin N8ii offers a surrounding musicality in all genres. The monitoring capability in smooth jazz doesn’t apply to subsequent genres, but the experiences so far in this power test already tell the whole story.
